When a company’s ROIC is greater than the WACC, the company is referred to as a value creator (some investors use WACC +2% to be conservative). Agriculture-based ventures, too, usually have lower margins owing to weather uncertainty, high inventory, operational overheads, need for farming and storage space, and resource-intensive activities.Īutomobiles also have low margins, as profits and sales are limited by intense competition, uncertain consumer demand, and high operational expenses involved in developing dealership networks and logistics.Another important use of the ROIC is to compare it to the same company’s weighted average cost of capital (WACC) - a weighted measure of the cost of capital provided by shareholders and debtholders.īy comparing the ROIC to the weighted cost of capital from all sources, you can determine whether the company is considered a value creator or a value destroyer, and put a valuation on that growth potential. Operations-intensive businesses such as transportation, which may have to deal with fluctuating fuel prices, drivers’ perks and retention, and vehicle maintenance, usually have lower operating margins. Meanwhile, luxury goods and high-end accessories often operate on high-profit potential and low sales. Similarly, software or gaming companies may invest initially while developing a particular software/game and cash in big later by simply selling millions of copies with very little expense. High operating margin sectors typically include those in the services industry, as there are fewer assets involved in the production than an assembly line. ![]() For example, raw materials purchased in bulk are often discounted by wholesalers. A large business's increased level of production means that the cost of each item is reduced in several ways. Economies of scale refer to the idea that larger companies tend to be more profitable. To reduce the cost of production without sacrificing quality, the best option for many businesses is expansion. Cutting advertising budgets may also harm sales. Cutting too many costs can also lead to undesirable outcomes, including losing skilled workers, shifting to inferior materials, or other losses in quality. While the average margin for different industries varies widely, businesses can gain a competitive advantage in general by increasing sales or reducing expenses-or both.īoosting sales, however, often involves spending more money to do so, which equals greater costs. When a company's operating margin exceeds the average for its industry, it is said to have a competitive advantage, meaning it is more successful than other companies that have similar operations.

Most famous simon and garfunkel songs1/18/2024 ![]() His first new solo album in many years, Up To Now, has recently been released, and it features some beautifully intimate acoustic moments, the kind he is happy to embrace with Paul Simon in these string of concerts. "He also spoke about a world of other subjects, since we covered much of the history of Simon & Garfunkel with him during our first interview. Wearing a "Boxing Helena" cap that hid his head of curls, he ate eggs and onions, drank coffee, and spoke about the way he and Simon achieve their famous sound. We spoke to Artie over breakfast at a little diner near his horne on a grey Manhattan morning. Though they are consistently drawn apart over the years by the diverging paths of their artistic tastes, when they come together the sound they make is unmistakably their own. Though Simon & Garfunkel have had their famous fights and disagreements over the years (somewhat touched upon in the following interview), one thing they do seem to agree on is that the blend of their voices in harmony is a sound sweeter than most things heard on this earth. Blessed not only by an angelic voice and a profound gift for harmony singing, but also by a lifetime musical alliance with one of the world's greatest living songwriters, Paul Simon. It's an understanding that Artie does have, that his life is blessed. ![]() He doesn't understand that everybody's life isn't like this." "The thing is," Artie notes, "that he thinks this is normal. ![]() ![]() He's a completely wonderful person." We look into James' playroom, a colorful carnival of toys with windows overlooking the autumnal park. Artie also introduces his wife, Kim, who says, "Don't write anything negative about Artie, because there is nothing negative about him. Today Artie shows me around his spacious apartment on the east end of Central Park in Manhattan, and introduces his two-year old son James, who has a head of wild curls like his famous father. Neil Young's Bridge School concert in San Jose, California, Simon and Garfunkel sing the line with the new phrasing. Though neither he nor Artie are quick to accept the label of "perfectionist," in truth both are so accustomed to the perfection of their miraculous vocal blend that a small change like this one is not to be.rushed into, even after rehearsing it many times that afternoon. Later Paul mentions that at the last minute he decided not to change the line. That night, before an ecstatic crowd of 1500, they sing the line as they always have, leaving the new phrasing for a different show. But after a few times through the line in which both Simon and Garfunkel hesitate slightly, they settle at last on identical phrasing, with Simon's lower harmony beautifully matching Garfunkel's melody. reminding the listener that these are, after all, two separate singers with two separate voices, a bit of a revelation after hearing the perfection of their blend for all these years. We're at the Paramount theater in Manhattan on an October afternoon, about halfway into their unprecedented 21-night series of sold-out shows, a retrospective of Simon's career that begins and ends with a Simon & Garfunkel reunion, and is connected by all the facets of Simon's extraordinary career: folk, gospel, doo-wop, jazz, rock, plus the invigorating, beautiful rhythms of his African and Brazilian- based songs.īut right now Paul and Artie, are going over and over one line in the song that first made them world-famous, the Sound of Silence." The line is "Take my arms that I might reach you," and the two men are settling into a new phrasing, turning the ascending line into a descending one, starting after a half-beat pause and changing the lyrics slightly to "that I may reach out to you." At first their combined phrasing is slightly askew.

Smd surface mount led connector1/17/2024 ![]() Surface mounting lends itself well to a high degree of automation, reducing labor cost and greatly increasing production rates.Ĭonversely, SMT does not lend itself well to manual or low-automation fabrication, which is more economical and faster for one-off prototyping and small-scale production, and this is one reason why many through-hole components are still manufactured. Alternatively, SMT and through-hole components can be soldered on the same side of a board without adhesive if the SMT parts are first reflow-soldered, then a selective solder mask is used to prevent the solder holding those parts in place from reflowing and the parts floating away during wave soldering. Adhesive is sometimes used to hold SMT components on the bottom side of a board if a wave soldering process is used to solder both SMT and through-hole components simultaneously. Often the surface tension of the solder is enough to hold the parts to the board in rare cases parts on the bottom or "second" side of the board may be secured with a dot of adhesive to keep components from dropping off inside reflow ovens if the part is above the limit of 30g per square inch of pad area. Components became much smaller and component placement on both sides of a board became far more common with surface mounting than through-hole mounting, allowing much higher circuit densities and smaller circuit boards and, in turn, machines or subassemblies containing the boards. ![]() Components were mechanically redesigned to have small metal tabs or end caps that could be directly soldered to the surface of the PCB. The design approach first demonstrated by IBM in 1960 in a small-scale computer was later applied in the Launch Vehicle Digital Computer used in the Instrument Unit that guided all Saturn IB and Saturn V vehicles. Much of the pioneering work in this technology was done by IBM. By the late 1990s, the great majority of high-tech electronic printed circuit assemblies were dominated by surface mount devices. By 1986 surface mounted components accounted for 10% of the market at most, but was rapidly gaining popularity. Surface-mount technology was developed in the 1960s. It may have short pins or leads of various styles, flat contacts, a matrix of solder balls ( BGAs), or terminations on the body of the component. Both technologies can be used on the same board, with the through-hole technology often used for components not suitable for surface mounting such as large transformers and heat-sinked power semiconductors.Īn SMT component is usually smaller than its through-hole counterpart because it has either smaller leads or no leads at all. It also allows for more components to fit on a given area of substrate. In industry, this approach has largely replaced the through-hole technology construction method of fitting components, in large part because SMT allows for increased manufacturing automation which reduces cost and improves quality. An electrical component mounted in this manner is referred to as a surface-mount device ( SMD). Surface-mount technology ( SMT), originally called planar mounting, is a method in which the electrical components are mounted directly onto the surface of a printed circuit board (PCB). Surface-mount capacitor A MOSFET transistor, placed upon a British postage stamp for size comparison. The capacitors and resistors pictured are 0603 (1608 metric) package sizes, along with a very slightly larger 0805 (2012 metric) ferrite bead. The small rectangular chips with numbers are resistors, while the unmarked small rectangular chips are capacitors. Use Nick Gammons excellent "Arduino sketches" to check the chip and burn the bootloader.Method for producing electronic circuits Surface-mount components on a USB flash drive's circuit board. Check for bridging solder and either dab it with the iron or use braid. Heat the leg first and apply the solder - good lighting and a good magnifier helps a lot. Use the scalpel to hold the chip in place and solder one leg using a very fine multicore solder and a good quality fine iron tip. User a tacky flux like Chip Qwik SMD 291 on all the pads and seat the new chip in place. When the chip if off, clean up the pads with solder braid. The trick is to avoid lifting the pads and tracks as well. ![]() Slide the scalpel blade under the body of the chip and gently ease it up while running the iron along the legs. Repeat until there are half a dozen legs free. If the chip has "gone", just bend the leg up. Put the iron tip on the leg of the pin where it enters the plastic. Keep the iron tip on the braid and drag it along the line of pins on each side. I use a soldering iron and solder wick to pull as much solder off as possible. The hardest part is to remove the old chip. Have just replaced an Arduino Nano 32-pin TQFP.

It's a great system in that it allows everyone, from the new computer user to the web-surfing veteran, to keep their software up to date.Īlthough there is actually a Software Update application located in /System/Library/CoreServices, Software Update is, in a more general sense, a system that Mac OS X uses to check for, and install, updates. With Software Update, your computer will check for updates for you, either on a regular schedule or when you get the urge to tell it to. Only people who actively kept track of software updates-from websites, mailing lists, or newsgroups-would know about every new release.Īlthough Software Update generally updates only Apple software (Mac OS X and applications like iTunes, iMovie, and iPhoto), a few non-Apple applications that are installed with Mac OS X, such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer, are also sometimes updated via Software Update. Apple has always released minor updates to the operating system, or new versions of applications, on a fairly regular basis however, in the past, many users were never even aware that such updates were available. This is a very good thing, in my opinion. However, in Mac OS X, Apple has designed Software Update to be the way for users to keep their OS and Apple-provided application software up to date. Apple first introduced Software Update in Mac OS 9 some people used it regularly, others never even realized it existed.

Wrc 9 test area map1/17/2024 The result can’t be denied, though: there are simply fewer locations in this new game, though this is somewhat compensated for by the addition of a load of extra stages in the Finland and Portugal rallies, meaning the total number of races is still higher (108 this time compared to 102 in last year’s game), even if the diversity in scenery has dropped a little. If you’re keeping count, this means there are fewer locations in WRC 9 than there were in WRC 8.Īgain, it could be argued that this is no fault of the development team: we’re sure licensing issues prevented them from keeping in a few of the other tracks, even just as an option to play them outside of the main season. ![]() What this means is that four rallies (Australia, Catalunya, Chile and Corsica) have been removed from the last game, and the three new rallies originally planned for this season (Japan, New Zealand and Kenya) have been included. Here, then, you instead get the normal 13-round season as it was originally listed by the WRC before it started. In real life, the 13-round season was suspended after three rounds, found itself stuck in limbo for six months, returned with a couple of previously unplanned rallies in Estonia and Monza (which therefore aren’t in this game), went on for a while longer, then was eventually cancelled after just 7 rounds. This year’s game is technically based on the 2020 Championship, but because of real-world, pandemic-related events that were no fault of the developers, it’s no longer accurate. WRC 9 provides a video game representation of the official FIA World Rally Championship. Sadly, WRC 9 has failed to address these, leading us to believe that, at this point, this is probably the best Switch owners are going to get without some sort of upgraded hardware.įor those who missed out on last year's game. Unfortunately, while the WRC franchise has gained accolades on other systems, it’s struggled to find a foothold on the Switch due to a number of technical and practical issues – and last year’s effort was sadly lacking in a number of areas, particularly visually. While the Colin McRae Rally series has over time evolved into Dirt – which tends to focus on more over-the-top racing (not that it’s on Switch anyway) – the official games of the World Rally Championship continue to stick with a completely straight-laced approach to a sport that was never about Dirt’s chaotic 12-car races and has always been about two people – a driver and their navigator – conquering the environment together. Kenya and Japan), and we can at least have somewhat better balanced AI thanks to the community? Hmm.Over the past few years, the WRC series of rally games has gained a reputation for providing arguably the most accurate depiction of the sport. Go with WRC Generations for the presumably better physics and greater number of stages? Or go with WRC 9, where you still get solid physics, many great stages (esp. If the AI is ridiculously unbalanced by default (as I suspect it will be) and if there's no way uncovered to get into the files and fix it, I'll have a difficult decision on my hands. is there, get into the AI text files, and balance the AI for us (like Stephen Bailey did with WRC 9). And if they haven't, I hope modders can get around whatever encryption etc. So I hope the WRC Generations devs have put more time than previous versions into bugfixes and AI performance calibration. what I ultimately am looking for from a Kylotonn WRC series title is a well-balanced, optimized single player experience against AI - especially the career mode.
